in my views users want a secure connection, so having one is a source of value to them. Value doesn’t just come from content, it comes from user experience and user safety too. The modern internet user is more wary than ever about data protection and privacy, particularly following the PRISM/NSA scandal, the Cookie Law farce, the insanely invasive privacy policies on many websites like  (Facebook Messenger, Pinterest, Xbox Connect etc) etc. While they are not all relevant to HTTPS, the fact is the average internet user is now highly sensitised to anything related to data security and privacy.

Google doesn’t exist to do website owners any favors. it exists to give searchers exactly what they want. And searchers currently want secure connections. I don’t think this is Google to trying to change the world. this is Google seeing that the world has changed and simply pandering to it by rewarding those websites that have kept up and remained competitive according the new consumer’s needs and wants.
